Now that summer is here and you’re enjoying BBQ season, you might be wondering what the best way to clean the BBQ actually is. Our suggestion is to do some light cleaning of the BBQ after each time you use it, or trust a professional cleaner to get it right the first time! We’re giving you our easy checklist on how to clean the grill so that it’s as easy and painless as possible!

How To Clean Your BBQ

Why Clean Your Grill

It’s a common misconception that the high heat of the grill makes it self-cleaning; however, over time, grease and food can build up, attracting germs and pests. We recommend creating a barbecue cleaning routine, making sure to brush the grill after each use.

Though a simple brush will often suffice to keep your barbecue grill free from debris, it’s important to create a cleaning schedule to deep clean your grill, warding off bacteria and germs that may change the flavour of your food. To deep clean your grill, we recommend the following grill cleaning tools:

  • A wire brush
  • A grill scraper
  • Grease-cutting soap
  • Vegetable oil
  • Rags or paper towel

Steps to Clean the BBQ:

  1. Make sure the BBQ is mostly cooled down after you’ve cooked on it. Don’t start cleaning immediately after you’ve finished barbequing or else you run the risk of burning your hands or even your arms when you’re cleaning it!
  2. Spray vegetable oil over the BBQ’s grate and scrape it down with a BBQ spatula or wire brush. It’s okay to do this step while the grill is a little warm because the leftover cooking heat can actually help you remove the grime.
  3. Once you’ve scraped down the grate, wipe it down with a paper towel. If your grill looks clean, you’re done! If not, read on to the next step.
  4. Use your barbecue’s cleaning setting to preheat the grill. Although this setting will burn up the things that have fallen into the grill, it doesn’t actually clean it. By putting your grill at this setting, you will loosen up stuck-on food to make your cleaning job easier.
  5. Disconnect the gas as a safety precaution.
  6. If you have some disposable gloves, now’s the time to put them on to protect your hands. Lift up the cooking grate (make sure it’s cool enough to handle) and use a wire brush to remove all the residue from grease and food.
  7. Clean the barrier above the burners, the space where your grill has the rocks or metal plates that heat it up. Pick off any stuck pieces of food and use the wire brush to help you do so.
  8. Wipe the area down with paper towels or a rag, including the barrier, cooking grates and anywhere else residue might have fallen.
  9. Inspect the grill and make sure it’s clean to your standards.
